Closing the gap in broadband precision impedance metrology
Recent developments in electrical impedance metrology across Europe highlight the increasing need for SI-traceable, automated and accurate measurements over the 100 mHz to 2 MHz extended frequency range.
AIM-EF leverages the world-leading expertise of European national metrology institutes and universities to expand capabilities and significantly advance the accuracy of traceable impedance measurements — enhancing EU leadership across materials science, sensors, energy distribution, acoustics, biotechnology, impedance instrumentation and quantum technologies.
Traceable accuracy across the spectrum
Establish traceable and accurate impedance measurements over a broad range of frequencies to meet the demands of different scientific and industrial fields, and develop a pathway towards a universal Quantum Impedance Standard (QIS) based on quantum Hall devices operating up to 2 MHz.

Traceable electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for energy storage performance and safety, biosensing and early disease diagnosis.
Quantum standards
GaAs- and graphene-based quantum Hall devices characterised up to 2 MHz, charting a pathway towards a universal quantum impedance standard.
Instrument calibration
Robust calibration of commercial impedance meters, analysers and EIS systems, with documented uncertainty budgets for instrument manufacturers and calibration laboratories.
Electronics & components
Accurate characterisation of capacitors and inductors used in switching converters at frequencies from hundreds of kilohertz to megahertz.
RF & coaxial lines
Accurate low-frequency modelling of coaxial line standards to help close the long-standing “LF–RF” gap in the metrology community.
